The Agricultural Sector Coordination Unit (ASCU)
Who we are
The Agricultural Sector Coordination Unit (ASCU) is the secretariat of ten ministries addressing agriculture and rural development. Their main development challenges are ensuring food security, reducing poverty and unemployment, and transforming agriculture from subsistence to farming as a business.
ASCU's activities are derived from the Agricultural Sector Development Strategy 2010 - 2020 (ASDS).
The ASDS is the national policy document for the agricultural sector in Kenya. It gives direction to public and private players in addressing the major development challenges facing the agricultural sector, and in responding to opportunities and challenges at the national, regional and global levels.
The vision of the agricultural sector is: ‘A food-secure and prosperous nation.'
What we do
ASCU's mandate is to coordinate the activities of sector ministries and other stakeholders in implementing the vision of the agricultural sector. It achieves this through the following activities
- driving reforms in the sector
- monitoring and fast-tracking the implementation of the ASDS across the agricultural sector
- influencing resource allocation to areas of highest impact
- initiating major studies and policies within the agricultural sector
Ultimately, ASCU envisages being the centre of choice for agricultural reforms, the one stop shop for agricultural information and for building the capacity of stakeholders involved in or affected by agricultural reforms.
Our Vision:
To transform Kenya's agriculture into a profitable, commercially oriented and internationally competitive economic activity.
Our Mission:
To promote and guide development of agriculture, livestock, fisheries and agro-based production systems, as well as strengthen related institutions for sustainable social and economic prosperity. |
